A Goleta woman turned herself into Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Santa Maria this morning. She hopes that this action will delay possible deportation. KSBY news reporter Megan Abundance was present at the scene and now joins us live in Santa Maria at the Homeland Security building. Juana Maria Flores has been in America since 1988, entering without permission. Except for a brief trip to Mexico in 1999, she has been here ever since. However, that trip caught the attention of ICE, and she now faces deportation. Despite checking in with ICE annually, she filed a stay of removal today in an attempt to remain in the country. Flores takes care of her ten children and 15 grandchildren, all of whom are US citizens. Some of them accompanied her to the immigration building on Wednesday. Flores enters the ICE building and files for a stay of removal based on her role as a caregiver for her disabled son. ICE instructs her to return in two weeks. Her attorney reveals that ICE was unaware of her significant caregiver role and its impact on her son's health. Without her, he would not have the stability he needs. ICE agrees to consider her son's condition and she is allowed to stay for a few more days. They will contact her and her attorney within the next two weeks to schedule another check-in. They also request her son's medical records to expedite the process. Megan Abunda, the KSBY news reporter,...
