Ice s Form: What You Should Know

Ice is not a physical substance, but instead is a combination of water and frozen salt crystals.  The term “crystal” is used because the crystalline (or “crystalline”) forms that freeze at relatively low temperatures are not water.  The term “ice” instead is the general term for the type of ice that forms in this process.  Crystals in the ground (ground ice) consist of water and frozen salt, whereas ice on the surface (icebergs) are typically composed of liquid water, and ice in the air is primarily salt. Ice — Wikipedia There are seven ice formations, or types of ices, that have different physical properties than the other ice formations.  The six major types are  [Note: ice is a type of rock, but we will only be talking about the seven ice formations below, and the properties of each.  We will then go on to talk about the four “main” types of ice: ice water, brine water, salt water, and vapor water.] How Ice Formed The Ice Age, also known as the Younger Drays, occurred around 11,700 years ago; it is widely believed to have been caused by the end of the Ice Age ice ages.  (However, some scientists have claimed that the end of ice ages is in fact the beginning of the Younger Drays.) The end of the Ice Age ice ages resulted from the expansion of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Ice continued to spread north along the coast of the Arctic Ocean. However, the Greenland Ice Sheet was significantly smaller than prior, and this reduced the amount of water that fell into the North Atlantic. This resulted in a lower water level along the North Atlantic coast. Eventually the North Atlantic Ocean began to shrink, and this began to warm up the upper layer of the atmosphere, causing precipitation, a “lunar wet,” and eventually a shift to cooler temperatures along the coast of the North Atlantic.   The Greenland Ice Sheet continued to spread north until it eventually passed the coast of the North Atlantic. It is also thought that glaciers had begun to collapse and retreat into the ocean as the ice receded.  This is known as the “thaw”, and resulted in the formation of the Great Lakes.  It is possible that some Greenland ice sheets survived into the middle of the Twentieth Century.
